one of the most adverse characteristics i find very disturbing about us Filipinos is our somewhat innate gift to resort to "PALAKASAN" either under a hopeless case or simply just to get what we want and be where we want to be. and i have seen this happen to people many times during my lifetime. Let's take for example Tim. When he was about 11 years old, his family decided to transfer in the city because his parents were born and raised here. They were from Laguna and they just arrived and are new in the city or at least he was new to the city. He was to be in 4th grade in the opening of the school year. He needed to change school of course, (they dint have that much to buy a jet plane or something), but the school where his father wanted him to enrol in has no more slots for new students. But like magic, his father managed to pull some strings and knowing the teachers and relatives and all .... so yahoo! he was officially enrolled. just like that. Now Tim always has been in Section A-1 since elementary, but that was until the opening of his 2nd year in high school. Because only the top 10 percent of the class are retained and the rest are randomly distributed to the other sections. He din't mind at all but when his father knew this, his father went to the rescue. thadaaa! his adviser was his aunt. a cousin of his father. And just like magic, he was pulled out of the class and tadaan! second day of the school year- welcome to section A-1... he couldn't do nothing. All he could do was to put up a frown and thought,"Gawd! i can handle myself! im in highschool! " Now Tim during his college days wanted to get a job for a sideline. He told his father about his plans, just for him to know. He submited his requirements by himself and all, and got his interview. And then come interview day, and just when he was about to leave the house for the interview, his father told him. "look for Mrs. Buenaventura, you don't need to undergo interview. She's the manager and I know her husband." "damn!" he almost said. But he badly wanted to work, he thought. so he went, he wanted to argue but hey, what's the use?. Then Tim was in his 3rd year college. He's a member of the varsity team and during the inter school competion, they underwent a selection process to compose the team to represent the city for the regional games. But out of 12 players, only 2 were chosen from his school. He was not one of them. But the truth is most of them thought Tim was going to be one of them coz he's not that far from the others when in comes to skills. He was one of the more competitive players on the team. It's just that there are too many talents from the other schools. He knew this and he had no qualms about it, it's much better he thought because he knew the practices are going to be a killer. His father, during his younger years was the team captain in that same sport in that same school. Tim and his father dint talk much about the fact that Tim is not going to the regional games. Everything was cool. That was what Tim thought. Tim wasn't expecting too much either and he thought it was just going to be too tough for him. But he loved the game, but not as much as his father. huwahahaa. The next day he went back to his normal routine in school. Tim passed by the playing field on his way home, when he heard his coach called out to him. He asked his coach what is the matter and his coach smiled at him and said "hey, are you free on dec. 27-30?, coz i want you to come to practice, i decided i wanted 3 from our school to be in the team. so what do you say? are you going to vacation or something?"Shocked, Tim thought the roster was complete and there arent any slots left. His coach said that's not a problem and besides he wanted more players for the team. Without much thought, Tim said yes. He thought his coach just wanted additional players to help in practice games. And besides he wasn't going to go on vacation or something. Then he went home. But somehow, something hit him and suddenly, a light bulb almost detonated inside his head that it almost hurt. "Oh, shit!" "baka... baka...." waaaaaahh! itay ko po! ano ba naman.!" tangna college na ano to mga toddlers sa little league? He just shrugged and almost laughed at it. Smiled. He remembered his father knew Coach too well they were almost barkada. He din't go to practice, though. But he made sure his father wouldn't know. He din't want to disappoint his father, even if it meant his rather humiliating experience. He understood him and he knew how fulfilling and happy it makes him do do these things for a son. Pinoy ka talaga tay!
