philo 103 ethics

Group work ba naman? Wednesday, November 23, 2005 Group Work on Pornography Answer the following guide questions 1. What is your opinion about the article? 2. On what personal moral grounds would you say that pornography is moral or immoral? Why do you think so? 3. What is your advise to people who engages in the creation and distribution of such pornographic materials? Note: Deadline, on or before Friday, 5pm, nov.25. Please be advised that you will have to send your answers electronically by posting a comment on this blogsite. Thanks... www.philosophyclass103.blogspot.com ito ang article na ewan. This has long been an issue perhaps, but the sex scandals rocking the pure thoughts of many citizens in zamboanga should be addressed by the government. the National Telecommunications Commision, the city council, and the ducational institutions, should enforce their regulations concerning the spread of multi-media messages of young couples., especially college students in the local academic communities, doing what shold be documented (or preferably not) for their own personal reasons. The photos in today's page are taken from the MMS spreading around one university to the other of kolehiyalas and their boyfriends perfoming sexual acts. And certainly, students from other universities are geifhning innocence and laughing at the educational insitution they so, to some extent "represent," all the while flashin smikrs and raising eyebrows over the "prestige" the school boasts of. This is probably one revolting story again to the purists, but perhaps the academe should be advised to do something regulatory in so far as these are concerned. Everyone is entitled to his or her own constitutional rights to privacy and some of our young ladies are not just cognizant of the consequences of their action. Some of these girls are not even citizens of Zamboanga, but transients who have just come for the duration of college days. Some of these young women are noted to have come from protective families down south, and a conservative religion that has entrapped their emotions and desires for years. The social inhibitions somehow, misguidedly burst ar the first sight of freedom from strict parental control, and broke loose when they came to Zamboanga for schooling. A sad plight, and a misfortune, perhaps. but one that concerned women's groups in the city or legislative leaders should look into not for publicity, not for politics, but for the good and noble intent of simply helping out )the city, the parents, the academic sector, and the 'performers' themselves) by addressing the concerns of thse young students. While it will be an insult to the great Jose Rizal to bring in his abused line, "the youth are the hope of the motherland." - still, the line shold remain at the baseline of every legislator's intent in issuing statements to the media, and passing laws, even without stating so like some sickening orators. Charlatans ought not quote the national hero. Perhaps, students receiving video messages of co-students shold also not feast on them, as pasing them on make them parcitipatory in the abuse of the rights to privacy especially of the girl. Or, with the legal mazim in mind that one should come to court with clean hands, do these constitutional rights get defeated when there was no knowledge of and consent by the parties? Better still, perhaps, lawyers shold please react to this and share to the reading public their much needed rhetoric, ala-ponente.

hindi na ko maghihintay nang alas 5, puede na to. kinarir ko to...! bahala madaming mali mali... isang taon na ko dito ehhh edit, sulat, edit,,,ang bagal ko talaga. ang bagal talaga.

We totally understand how the author of this article sees the sex scandal controversies. We even support and appreciate the author’s noble intention to put a stop to these mishaps that seem to mar the society’s ideal standards of conduct and ethics. But the author seemed to have missed out the true situation of today’s youth. He described the people’s thoughts as “pure,” and this is highly debatable, he didn’t realize that the times of “purity” and total decency are long gone, we even doubt it if there really was a time. Many studies have shown that today’s young generation is far more inclined to pre-marital sex more than ever and their approach towards sex is far different from their parent’s, or worse, grandparent’s doctrinal ways. The author failed to grasp the fact that these actions will go on with or without the advent of these technologies.

He also failed to see that to try and regulate the spread or use of multi-media messages is almost an impossible task to achieve at this point in time, because even 1st world countries have little means against internet hackers and violators, more so in trying to control and regulate multi-media messages. The Philippines have yet to implement laws and rules regarding internet and even cell phone use, so asking our puny incompetent government or any branch of organization to regulate the use spread of these scandals, does seem to be like asking Gloria to voluntarily step down.

We also believe that the author’s critique against the schools where the "stars" of the scandals are enrolled into is irrelevant. Because these cases are isolated or come in few numbers, so it is not fair to ridicule the institution's ideals and teachings just because a handful of students has been caught doing so. Quite many of the students are still innocent about the topic, and still more actually refrain themselves from doing so because they are aware that flaunting their naked bodies in bed with their boyfriends/girlfriends is not a pretty scene for their parents and relatives to see, so they use their smarts and do it off cam. It is biased because the number of scandals that has been produced (like a movie production) by students who come from a certain school does not translate to the actual number of students who are engaged in "self-porn production". It is more of the number of students who has the ability, or more appropriately, the money to buy the most sophisticated cell phone for their own personal creative or non-creative use.

We believe that the more significant issue here is the implementation of laws to regulate the access and spread of unwanted multi-media messages. And until the time comes when such means can be implemented, scandals will continue to exist.

Now for the harder part, after much discussion, we have come to the decision that there are levels or categories to which we must consider before a pornographic material be considered as immoral. Firstly, going with the general standard of morals and ethics, pornography is immoral because a pornographic material, in whatever form, always has the primary purpose to cause sexual arousal. And this intention, is against the confines of our society’s moral standards, unacceptable and taboo.

Our own concept does not go far from the general context, we put primary significance to the intention of the creator of a pornographic material, his/her intended audience, the effect to the audience, and more importantly the depravities that goes along with such materials especially against the women. The degradation of the women in many of these materials, more so if there is no consent from the participants of the material, we believe that this is vital and very significant in the discussion of the issue.

However, when asked if “what if there is consent from the stars themselves and they created the material and are the masterminds behind its distribution?” We believe it is still immoral on grounds that to be aware of the consequences of the acts is an individual responsibility, and that to be aware that the material can be distributed easily, and will eventually be seen by many among the conventional society does not exempt the source, the culprit behind these unacceptable plights.

Our advice to people who are part of the pornography industry, is to at least find a way to regulate and properly distribute their materials, off the hands of the young uncorrupt minds that are inappropriate or ill-prepared for sex, much more for sex toys, escapades and stunts? They should also care for their “porn stars” and must have a more strict policy on how and who they hire, and not just recruit anybody ,especially the inclusion young teenage girls who are naive and would most probably repent on it later in their lives, and start thinking of the true respect they should deserve being humans.

They should better think of how they are affecting the society in general, or how unproductive and insignificant they are, well aside from it being a multi-million industry of course. And maybe re think of how they have been a huge part of the lives of the people in their materials, especially the women who has no option of turning back, and think, what if they were your own daughters or mothers. Think hard and better yet, find another job.

"Are we justified in breaking the civil law to obey a higher moral law in the context of an ethics of care?"

i think the question should be who decides what the moral law is? whose moral law are we talking about? we must deduce first the definition of what a moral law is before trying to understand civil law. for all there is to civil law is a product of a moral law where that certain society is ingrained with. ergo in the final analysis the question is an irony. if theres a difference between a moral law and a civil law is another question in itself.
as with regards to ethics of care. the idea itself subscribes to a certain moral law for the definition of the word care itself suggest a moral root.

(sori nakikigulo lang nyahahaha)

it is tragic when society has to legislate morality. there will always be a gray area we can explot.

let's begin at home. teach boys to respect women. that womanizing is not ok. that men and women should under the same set of rules. there should be no gender-defined roles at home.

having said that, porn will always be with us. but it should be defined as such. made available in areas defined for such.

and i withhold judgment of people who will be there.

sino nga pala ang nagsulat ng article?
"purist thoughts?"
"social inhibitions...misguidedly burst at the first sight of freedom from strict parental control?" (*&%)

the reasoning sounds so...juvenile. and i am being kind. galing ba ng pluto ang nagsulat? napag-isipan ba ito bago na-print? anong klaseng lohiko ito? at bakit parang kapag naisa-publiko ang isang private sex act, kahihiyan lang ng babae? galing ba ng stone age ang nagsulat nito?

the logic does not justify the printing. sayang ang puno.
