I believe that a major pre-requisite for a true national hero at least, is that he/she must possess or at least adhere to the aspirations and true intentions of his people. He must represent his people and stand for them in any given circumstance, for it is the "Filipino" people he is fighting for. But in the case of Rizal, this never happened. His repudiation of the revolution only attests to the fact that he was indifferent from his people. He was apart from his people in terms of his ideals, intentions and wants, by heart or in his mind. He was against true liberation because he never believed the "Filipino" people adequate, sufficient or worthy enough for true independence. His ideals and visions may have been a major source of inspiration for the revolution, bolstering the pride of the nation, but ideals alone will never lead to victory and independence. The independence that we are so grateful for today was a result of the revolution and Rizal was a major instrument to this. Rizal's mission and vision may have been for the betterment of the lives of the people, he dreamt of a Filipino nation socially elevated, educated, into a state where there will be no "indios" but only "Filipinos." (again for reforms, equal rights, protection of property: in short a province of Spain). But this path that he presented, if ever realized, would have provided a different and dreadful result. A people, a nation far different from what we are today. A people who had never seen light, true independence and worse would have caused a great delay into our liberation which is for me, the worst possible scenario that could have happened. The delay could have further alienated and separated our nation's identity from its true destiny and direction. The delay could have contaminated our identity even more. It could have pounded our culture into pieces, until we would be left with nothing. Moreover, may have resulted to the total wipe out of our already wretched identity and culture. Just picture Philippine society under Spain for 50-100 years more? No Life, no matter how gracious and better it may be, can surpass or even compromise the right and privilege of "true Independence."
